Troubleshooting Salt Systems

Regardless of manufacturer, salt systems have a few common malfunctions that can often be solved or at least understood at home. Here’s what you can fix, and what might require a service call:

💧Check or Inspect Cell: There may be scale formation inside the salt cell. You can use a cell cleaning solution to dissolve any build up, hopefully solving the issue. If you’ve cleaned the cell recently, you can often reset an internal timer that triggers the Inspect alert. For Hayward AquaRite systems, press and hold the Diagnostic button to reset.

💧No Flow: Cleaning or backwashing your filter or increasing a variable speed pump’s rpm may be all it takes to solve this issue. Check also that skimmer and pump baskets are empty and all necessary valves are open. If you’ve done all this and still have an error, there may be a problem with the flow sensor itself. You might be able to replace it yourself, but a service call is a guaranteed fix.

💧Low/Zero Chlorine: If your cell is relatively new, check your chlorine output setting. Running the pump intermittently or at a low RPM may prevent adequate chlorine generation, so it may be necessary to adjust either the salt system, pump timer or rpm. If your cell is 5 or more years old, it may just be time for a new one. 😅

💧Check/High/Low Salt: To rule out a problem with the system’s salt sensor, we highly recommend a professional water test before making any major adjustments to the salt level. Too often a customer will add bag after bag of salt to no result, only to end up partially draining the pool to Lower their salt level on top of a system repair.
